Distinct Helping Profession
Professional coaching, as defined and practiced through the Professional Christian Coaching Institute (PCCI) and aligned with International Coaching Federation (ICF) standards, is a distinct helping profession. It is not therapy, consulting, advising/mentoring, or training.
ICF Definition of Coaching
Coaching is “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”
PCCI Christian Coaching Emphasis
Helps clients discern the gap between where they currently are and where they sense God is calling them to be. It draws out the deep purposes of the heart (Proverbs 20:5) through active listening and powerful questions, then supports your clarified vision with proactive action that comes from and makes sense to you.
What a Coach Is — Compared to Other Roles
A Coach:
-
Partners with the client in a future-focused, client-driven process aimed at growth, goal achievement, and maximizing potential.
-
Assumes the client is whole, resourceful, and creative; the coach facilitates self-discovery rather than fixing or directing.
-
Uses active listening, insightful reflection, and powerful (often open-ended) questions to evoke awareness, new perspectives, and breakthroughs.
-
Remains non-directive and agenda-free; the client sets the topics and owns the discoveries and action steps.
-
Creates psychological safety and accountability for sustainable, client-generated change.
-
In a Christian coaching context (PCCI): Listens for the client’s sense of God’s calling and helps draw out heart-level desires and purposes without imposing the coach’s own agenda or solutions.
Compared to a Therapist or Counselor:
-
Coach: Future-oriented (“how do we move forward and grow?”); focuses on maximizing potential, goal achievement, and action. No diagnosis or clinical treatment.
-
Therapist/Counselor: Past- and present-oriented; focuses on healing emotional wounds, trauma, dysfunctional patterns, or mental health concerns through clinical assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions. Licensed professionals address root causes and recovery.
Compared to a Consultant:
-
Coach: Does not diagnose problems or provide expert advice/solutions. Helps the client discover their own answers and create tailored, sustainable strategies through inquiry.
-
Consultant: Expert brought in to diagnose issues in their specialty area and prescribe or implement specific solutions (outside-in expertise).
Compared to an Advisor or Mentor:
-
Coach: Stays curious and non-directive; does not share personal wisdom, experiences, or recommendations as the primary method. Empowers the client to define their unique path.
-
Advisor/Mentor: Draws on their own journey and expertise to offer guidance, advice, encouragement, and lessons learned (more directive and experience-based).
Compared to a Trainer:
-
Coach: Facilitates learning and growth through dialogue, reflection, and accountability. No curriculum or structured teaching of specific skills/knowledge.
-
Trainer: Delivers instruction, teaches concrete skills or information through structured programs, demonstrations, and practice (instructor-led content delivery).
My Goal as Your Coach
My goal is to help you achieve meaningful breakthroughs during each of our sessions — insights, perspective shifts, clarity, and commitments to action that can be genuinely life-changing.
Rooted in PCCI and ICF principles, every coaching conversation is designed to be a high-value partnership that moves you forward. We focus on the gap between your current reality and the vision or calling of your heart, then translate new awareness into practical, life-honoring steps. The process is collaborative, respectful, and oriented toward sustainable transformation rather than quick fixes.
The Unique Value of Skilled Coaching: Listening, Reflection & Powerful Questions
One of the greatest values of working with me as your coach is being fully present with you through active listening, insightfully reflecting back what I hear, and asking questions in a way that leads to greater insights and breakthroughs.
-
I listen not only to your words but for underlying themes, values, desires, and the gap between where you are and where you sense God may be leading you.
-
By reflecting back key points, emotions, and patterns with clarity and without judgment, I help you hear yourself more clearly — often revealing insights you didn’t fully recognize.
-
Through skillful, thought-provoking questions, I help open doors to new awareness, challenge limiting assumptions, and spark powerful “aha” moments that lead to real breakthroughs in mindset (phronema), decisions, and action.
The result is coaching that is both deeply respectful and powerfully catalytic — you do the work and own the results, while I create the safe, focused space where breakthroughs become possible in each session.
